Writing exercises and the Firestarter Challenge
What I have planned for the writing exercises set up, is 5 different exercises a day, in categories such as form, imagery, poetic/literary devices, personas etc, which can be used simply as an exercise to write a few lines or a page to stretch your particular writing muscles, or they can be used to base a poem or story off of. Every month there will be 4 (or in August’s case, 3) titles available for the Firestarter exercise challenge, one each week, which must be the title of the poem in order to win the challenge (And it should make sense in the context of the poem). You can submit up to four pieces (again, one per week) for free, and the best submission of the month will receive a fabulous prize. August’s prize is $25 cashey money. The official contest exercises will begin on Monday, 8/6/07. For the meantime, though, if you need a writing exercise, we’d hate to turn you away empty-handed.
Imagery: A little dribble of paint on the carpet and the smell of brownies (or some sort of baked good)
Devices: Use at least two instances of assonance in every line of a poem.
Persona: Apartment maintenance person called in to extract an exotic animal from an apartment.
